Cómo rechazar a alguien en inglés
Si te encuentras en la situación opuesta y necesitas decirle a alguien que no te interesa, te ayudamos. Al fin y al cabo, el rechazo es algo que no debes tomarte de forma personal. A menos que estés casado y lleves orgullosamente tu anillo de bodas, puede ser difícil o imposible para otros adivinar tu estado civil. Consejos culturales para coquetear en países de habla inglesa
Salir con personas de diferentes culturas puede ser un desafío, pero esa es parte de la razón por la que también puede ser extremadamente gratificante. Salir de tu zona de confort puede ser difícil, y salir con alguien de una cultura diferente sin duda te expondrá a cosas nuevas y te hará considerar las cosas desde nuevos ángulos. Si bien esto sin duda te ayudará a crecer como persona, también debes tomar precauciones para evitar ser insensible (¡y para evitar avergonzarte!).
No interpretes demasiado el contacto físico
La cultura estadounidense es generalmente menos dada al contacto físico que muchas otras culturas, especialmente las latinoamericanas. Lo que podría considerarse un toque amistoso en tu cultura podría verse como un gesto demasiado familiar o incluso intrusivo en un país de habla inglesa. Observa cómo interactúan las personas y trata de igualar su nivel de contacto físico.
Los hombres deberían preparar sus carteras
Si bien las normas de género están evolucionando, en muchas culturas de habla inglesa, particularmente en EE. UU., todavía es común que los hombres se ofrezcan a pagar en una primera cita. Esta no es una regla estricta, y muchas mujeres prefieren dividir la cuenta, pero es un gesto inicial seguro. Siempre prepárate para pagar lo tuyo, y si tu cita se ofrece a pagar, un cortés “Are you sure? I’m happy to split the bill.” (“¿Estás seguro/a? Me alegra dividirlo”) es una buena respuesta. Si insisten, un sincero “Thank you, very kind.” (“Gracias, muy amable”) es apropiado.
Toma clases de baile (si planeas bailar)
Bailar puede ser parte de las reuniones sociales, especialmente en clubes o fiestas. Aunque no es tan central universalmente como en algunas culturas latinoamericanas, tener algunos movimientos básicos de baile puede ser una ventaja. Si vas a un lugar donde se espera bailar, saber algunos pasos puede ayudarte a sentirte más cómodo/a y seguro/a. ¡La clave es divertirse y no tomárselo demasiado en serio!
No cosifiques
Evita salir con alguien solo porque querías tacharlo de tu lista. Decir cosas como “Siempre quise salir con un/a estadounidense” o “Quería encontrar un/a compañero/a británico/a” reduce a las personas a su nacionalidad en lugar de a los individuos complejos que son.
Incluso si tienes buenas intenciones, puede ser fácil repetir uno de los muchos estereotipos sobre las personas de habla inglesa que son comunes en los medios de comunicación. Llamar a tu pareja “reservado/a” o “educado/a” solo refuerza estos estereotipos. Concéntrate en conocerlos como individuos.
Evita idealizar excesivamente el país en el que te encuentras
Viajar puede ser una experiencia increíblemente reveladora, y no te culpamos si te enamoras de uno (¡o varios!) de los países de habla inglesa. Sin embargo, es importante ser consciente de que estos países y culturas son tan complejos y diversos como el tuyo propio. Es fácil ver un país extranjero con gafas de color de rosa cuando no tenemos que experimentar las luchas y frustraciones que experimentan los lugareños.
No traduzcas todo literalmente
Puede que seas un Don Juan en tu lengua materna, pero ten cuidado con las traducciones literales de tus frases para ligar de confianza. Aunque técnicamente podrían tener sentido, ¡también podrían tener un significado totalmente diferente o simplemente no tener gracia! El humor y los juegos de palabras en inglés pueden ser muy diferentes del español.
Por ejemplo, la popular frase para ligar en español “Tantas curvas y yo sin frenos” se traduce literalmente, pero podría sonar incómoda o incluso un poco tosca para un hablante de inglés que no esté familiarizado con ese tipo de cumplido juguetón y directo. El equivalente en inglés podría ser algo más sutil o con otro tipo de giro ingenioso.
